Shrove Tuesday at SLLS Off to a Rollicking Start!

by Joe ScarryWith a wonderful turn-out for a first-time event -- 30 people! -- St. Luke's Logan Square held a rollicking Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) event Tuesday, February 21, 2012, to mark the beginning of Lent. Here are some of the highlights.* A delicious (and healthy!) spread - fruit, sausages, pancakes .... Special shout-out to David for manning the griddle!* A "King Cake" with a special surprise hidden inside. Peggy Brewer got the Baby Jesus - which means she gets a whole year of good luck.  (Stay close to Peggy!)* A host of musicians joined the fun - in addition to Noel and Joe, multi-instrumentalist Jason (sax, guitar, drum) and a whole rhythm section led by Melissa Wimer* We got in touch with our old spirituals as we sang "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" and "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing" wonderfully led by Kay Deacon!* Annie Rudnik gave a special demonstration of her tap-dancing* Kerry Jenkins stood up for a version of "Proud Mary" that was "nicccce ... and eassssy" !* Other songs in the Mardi Gras/New Orleans spirit included "Riding on the City of New Orleans" and "When the Saints Come Marching In* Best of all, the entire assembly did a wonderful job with the sing-along part -- there was seldom less than 4-part harmony going on!  Clearly this is a group that enjoys being together, and making music together.* We are inspired to do another event like this again soon! We're looking forward to seeing all of you at the next one!
