Occupy Palm Sunday

[UPDATE December, 2013: The tradition begun on Palm Sunday 2012 -- described below -- was continued with our "Remedy for Violence" gathering on Palm Sunday, 2013. To get involved with planning for Palm Sunday 2014 with St. Luke's and other members of the Logan Square Ecumenical Alliance (LSEA), email Joe Scarry jtscarry@yahoo.com !]L1014594On Palm Sunday Christians around the world gather to celebrate a pivotal moment in the public ministry of Jesus of Nazareth in which he took to the streets of Jerusalem, a city occupied by the forces of Empire, to advance an alternative vision -- God’s vision -- for human community. As Christians we have been called to follow Jesus, so this Palm Sunday we will be taking to the streets as well in a joyful gathering intended to share an alternative vision for how we can be community together as neighbors in Logan Square, as citizens of this nation, and as members of the human family around the world. To that end, members of congregations from across Logan Square and Humboldt Park will be processing from their respective houses of worship to the Logan Square monument at the end of services on Palm Sunday (April 1).  We will be singing and chanting songs of protest and praise as we occupy the green space at Kedzie, Milwaukee and Logan Boulevard.Once gathered there will be a series of teach-ins on topics reflecting the real needs of our neighbors in Logan Square and the ministries of our congregations as we work toward the realization of God’s vision for the world.  Specifically, we’ll be presenting news, information and opportunities for service and advocacy on matters of healthcare, housing, hunger and immigration. All are welcome at this public event, regardless of faith background or religious identification.  Everyone is encouraged to bring lunch for themselves with extras to share."Occupy Palm Sunday" -- Sponsoring CongregationsFirst Evangelical Lutheran ChurchHumboldt Park United Methodist ChurchKimball Avenue ChurchSt. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan SquareTo be added to the list of sponsoring congregations, or for more information, please contact Joe Scarry at jtscarry@yahoo.com.
