Jesus was incarcerated pre-trial

CAMPAIGN UPDATE:

05 April 2020

Thank you to everyone participating in our online Palm Sunday action. Today, on the first official day of our #DecarcerateChrist campaign, we already exceeded our original $2,000 goal!

Thanks to your support, we've been able to set a new goal of $5,000. This number is significant because approximately 5,000 people are locked up in Cook County Jail on a given day.

$5,000 represents the average amount of money required to be released.

Even $5 or $10 can be the difference between an accused person celebrating Easter at home or being imprisoned in a jail with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the midst of a public health crisis.

Over 2,000 years ago Jesus was unjustly arrested and incarcerated pre-trial.  Today, in Cook County over 2,000 people - mostly Black and Brown people - are trapped in jail during a global pandemic, just because they cannot afford bail.

Scripture tells us that whatever we do to our most vulnerable siblings, we do to Jesus.

As we celebrate Palm Sunday safely from our homes, waving palms and crying out, “Hosanna!” our joy is tempered because we know that Christ is incarcerated in the Cook County Jail.

This Holy Week we must #DecarcerateChrist.

We are partnering with the Chicago Community Bond Fund to raise money to get one of our incarcerated siblings #OutbyEaster.  Our goal is $2000 to guarantee the release of one person who needs our help.Go to our fundraising page. Give what you can, and invite your friends. Even $5 or $10  can be the difference between celebrating Easter at home, or being imprisoned in a jail with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the midst of a public health crisis. The mission of the Gospel is about liberating captives and setting people free. Let’s make this Easter the one where we break the bonds of injustice and #DecarcerateChrist.
