O Antiphons — Advent Midweek Conversation and Prayer
Advent Midweek Conversation and Prayer
The Great O Antiphons
Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.
November 10--December 22
In-person at church (3325 W Wrightwood)
On Wednesdays in Advent we gather together in community for conversation and prayer. We will use the ancient “Great O Antiphons” as a framework as we explore our relationship with God, ourselves, and one another.
In the ancient church the seven “Great O Antiphons” were used as the antiphons for the Magnificat at Vespers, one antiphon during each of the last seven days of Advent. They later formed the basis for the familiar Advent hymn “O come, O come, Emmanuel” based on a Latin hymn from the twelfth century and translated by John Mason Neale (1818–1866).
Each week we’ll explore a different O Antiphon, in conversation with themes relevant to our spiritual, communal, and public lives:
November 10 - O Wisdom - Making sense of a confusing world
November 17 - O Adonai - Civil disobedience / Divine obedience
November 24 - O King of Nations - Pledging our allegiance
December 1 - O Key of David - World AIDS Day
December 8 - O Morning Star - Encountering joy
December 15 - O Root of Jesse - Communing with the ancestors
December 22 - O Emmanuel - Longest Night
