Songs of Our Faith — Worship in July 2024

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
— Percy Bysshe Shelley, 19th century English writer

The singing of hymns has part of Christian worship since ancient days. Christians sing in joy and in grief; at baptisms and on deathbeds. Hymns set our faith to music.

When we sing, our whole bodies proclaim the gospel: our muscles, our breath, our vibrating vocal membranes and sinus chambers. Music stays with us in a different part of our brains and hearts than words alone. Music “vibrates in the memory,” connecting us to the stories of faithful Christians past and future.

Christian music can be timely and relevant — Here at St. Luke’s, we are grateful for Cantor Bev who is always introducing us to new hymnody that reflects modern language and contemporary issues. Music can also be timeless — A hymn sung by a grandparent might remain precious. Or for example, Mary’s song from the gospel of Luke is still a favorite two thousand years later.

During the month of July, we travel back in time a little to explore hymns from decades past. Remembering and reclaiming them for our faith today, our faith vibrates in a new frequency.

We invite your input during this season: What are the hymns or songs that have been important in your life of faith? Maybe there’s a song you sang in Sunday school, or a song that was your grandma’s favorite. Maybe it’s a song from a significant funeral, or a song from the radio. Send us the title or a YouTube recording. We’d love to sing and remember with you.
