Las Posadas at the Lathrop Homes this Sunday, Dec 13
Members of local religious congregations and community organizations will join with current and former residents of the Lathrop Homes for a Las Posadas procession and demonstration on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 13.The event will begin indoors at 1:30 pm at New Life Community Church, 2958 N. Damen (at Wellington), and conclude there at 3:30 pm.Las Posadas is a Latin American pre-Christmas tradition based on the story of Bethlehem. The community walks behind a young couple, playing the roles of Mary and Joseph, as they knock on one door after another, searching for a room at an inn. At the final door, there is a celebration. This is the third Las Posadas walk at the Lathrop Homes, the public housing development at Diversey, Damen & Clybourn. The CHA's plan for Lathrop would eliminate more than half of its public housing units -- with no commitment to replace them. Just as Mary and Joseph were turned away, this plan would turn away low-income and working class families from Chicago's North Side. In effect, the plan would use public funds to further segregate Chicago.Las Posadas is organized by the Logan Square Ecumenical Alliance and allied congregations in cooperation with the Lathrop Leadership Team, Lathrop Alumni, the Lathrop Local Advisory Council and the Logan Square Neighborhood Association. For more information, contact Pastor Bruce Ray of the Logan Square Ecumenical Alliance at kimballavenuechurch@yahoo.com or Tami Love of LSNA at tlove@lsna.net or (773) 384-4370.
