"Do You See Her?" Sermon from Sunday, June 12th

powelOn Sunday, June 12th, Pastor Darryl Thompson joined us as St. Luke's and was our guest preacher. He opened the story of the woman who washed Jesus feet with her hair and the story of Bathsheba for us. He declared God's hope to us. And he asked, "Do you see her?"

"Do you see her? This no name, no father, no husband, no child, no friends woman who can’t escape the label “sinner.” This woman who goes where she’s not invited – with tears in her eyes – seeking wholeness, seeking healing, seeking justice. Not the justice the Trump is seeking by wanting a judge to dismiss the class-action lawsuit against him. Not the justice that Turner’s victim is seeking. Not the justice that Bathsheba weeps for, a murdered husband and a dead son brought back to life. “This woman with no name comes forward hoping only for the justice that God sees her. That God has seen her and God does not shy away. That she might be restored to life, to wholeness, to the community, to self as a human being and not as a sinner.”Jesus absolves the penitent sinner - Luke 7:36-50
Many thanks to Pastor Emmy Kegler for providing cohesion for my thoughts on this. All quotes from her are from her blog (http://emmykegler.blogspot.com/2016/06/do-you-see-this-woman-preaching.html)

It was a timely sermon with the recent headlines:

"I remember some of the questions on social media at the time this story broke: “What was she wearing?” “Was she drunk?” “Was she a virgin?” “Was she flirting with him?” And of course, my favorite: “If she can’t remember, how do we know it really happened?” I remember my anger rising and wanting to yell at those people, “Do you see her?  Do you see her behind the dumpster? Do you see her unconscious on the ground? Do you see her with pine needles in her hair? Do you really see her? I don’t think you do, because if you did, you wouldn’t be asking these questions.”"

But it does not end there. So, if you weren't there on Sunday or even if you were, please consider reading the full text of Pastor Darryl Thompson's sermon here:Sermon 2016-06-12 Pente 4C 2 Samuel 11v26-12v15 Luke 7v36-50 'Do You See Her'
