Workshopping the Story

If you’ve ever told a public story, you’ve probably discovered that between the story you want to tell and the story you end up telling there is an important step: workshopping the story. Workshopping is the process of getting what’s in your head or your heart out into the open so you can find out how it’s heard and received by others. It’s getting important feedback from people you trust about what rings true and what sounds hollow. A story that is “workshopped” changes – it gets stronger, becomes ready to be shared with the wider world.Over the course of the last year, our story has gotten clearer. We have a strong conviction that we have been called and gathered by the Holy Spirit to be a powerful church that transforms lives and changes the world. As we move into a season of change and growth, St. Luke’s is invited by the Generosity Network to a congregation-wide process of setting bold goals with challenging, but achievable, benchmarks. We are asking each adult in our community to participate in a 2-session small group process in late-September and early-October that will lead into a congregational Town Hall meeting in November. The product of these conversations will form the basis for a new kind of annual budgeting process beginning with 2018. Rather than planning for the year ahead by simply repeating what we did in the previous year, we’ll ask what’s needed for us to live into our story more powerfully. We believe that when all of us as a congregation know and can tell the story of who we are, why we come together, and what difference that makes in our lives and in the life of the world, people will be drawn to join our work and support it with enthusiasm and generosity. The story we’re telling needs your voice!
