Advent 2017 at St. Luke's
You may laugh, and that's alright, but I want you to know that I love Advent at St. Luke's. Certainly, you who come to St. Luke's for events like Las Posadas or Christmas Caroling or Advent Vespers have the best of it. You are getting ready for the arrival of the Christ Child. You're preparing your heart to rejoice in a time when rejoicing is actually an act of resistance, an act of hope, an act of courage. And every year you do this with a focus.When you open your Christmas cards this year, you'll notice on the back, all of the various events. And in small tiny print at the top of the page, you'll see a verse from Isaiah:
A voice says, "Cry out!" and I say, "What shall I cry?"-Isaiah 40:6a
You also may have noticed that verse on the front with the blues and whites and purples of Advent growing in hope with Chicago along with it. In our designer's mind were these words:
Powerful Church.Transforming Lives.Changing the World.
Anyway, I love watching these things unfold for St. Luke's over Advent, hearing stories about worship and events, carefully preparing bulletins to help you attend to the Work of the People on Sundays, and being able to bear witness to what God is doing in this place that asks good questions, engages with neighbors, and is honest with feelings of joy and sorrow through it all. I hope you dig into all the ways you can get ready for the arrival of the Christ Child this year at St. Luke's.
