Pride Month at St. Luke's
A note from Pastoral Intern Elle:
This June is PRIDE MONTH at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan Square.
Pride is the time each year when we remember the powerful uprising led by trans women of color at Stonewall, celebrate LGBTQIA+ people, and recommit ourselves to the work of liberation for all. This year we mourn the loss of the ways we would normally celebrate Pride with big festivals, marches, parades, and parties. In the spirit of the tenacity, creativity, flexibility, and playfulness that are hallmarks of LGBTQIA+ culture, we invite you to keep Pride this month at St. Luke’s through our online community and presence. We will kick off Pride month with a community viewing of an episode of season 5 of Queer Eye which features Noah (he/him), a gay ELCA pastor, with special appearances by Megan Rohrer (they/them) the first openly transgender pastor in the ELCA, and Bishop Guy Erwin (he/him), the first openly gay bishop in the ELCA. Our viewing party will take place Friday, June 5th at 8:30 pm and include time for discussion using a discussion guide curated by Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries, Reconciling Works, and Pastoral Intern Elle Dowd.Sign up for this viewing party here. You can watch a trailer of this season of Queer Eye, including sneak peaks from Noah's episode here.Throughout the month you will notice the liturgy and preaching draw upon themes of queer theology and queer biblical interpretation. We are going off of our normal lectionary for the month and will dive more deeply into these narratives:June 7 - Holy Trinity SundayGenesis 1:1 - 2:4a | The Creation of the Heavens and the EarthJune 14 - God’s Rainbow PromisesGenesis 6 - 9 | Noah’s ArkJune 21 - Hospitality and WelcomeGenesis 19 | Sodom and Gomorrah RevisitedJune 28 - The Pretty Princess DressGenesis 37 | God’s Plan for JosephWe will wrap up our Pride celebrations with a virtual Pride Parade where you will be invited to dress up in your favorite rainbow gear, your most fabulous campy outfit, glitter, drag, or whatever makes you feel most like yourself. Look for more information on the St. Luke’s Pride Parade in future communications. We praise God for our LGBTQIA+ congregation members, community members, and friends, and look forward to this special time set apart to celebrate and learn more about the witness of our LGBTQIA+ siblings as we grow and learn together.
